SMS / Compare

Bird vs Vonage for SMS APIs

Compare the path from a valid sender to an observed delivery result. Include sender registration, message encoding and reply handling in the decision.

Where Vonage fits

Vonage offers a dedicated SMS API and a separate Messages API. Identify which interface your application uses before estimating a migration.

Where Bird fits

Bird combines SMS sending, sender configuration, destination controls and message events. Your application can follow a message from acceptance to the reported delivery outcome.

Run the same customer journey

Send a plain-text message, a Unicode message and a reply through a supported number. Compare segment counts, recorded delivery states and the application response to a repeated callback.

Make the switch deliberately

Move sending, delivery events and incoming replies as one route. Keep the old number path working until registration or number transfer work is complete.

Migrate from Vonage

Compare the SMS send requests.

This example uses the dedicated Vonage SMS API, not its Messages API. Prepare an eligible sender for each provider. Vonage returns a per-message status inside its response; Bird returns an accepted message to follow through delivery events.

Vonage SMS API

send.sh
curl --fail-with-body --silent --show-error \
  https://rest.nexmo.com/sms/json \
  --user "$VONAGE_API_KEY:$VONAGE_API_SECRET" \
  --data-urlencode "from=$VONAGE_SMS_FROM" \
  --data-urlencode "to=$VONAGE_SMS_TO" \
--data-urlencode 'text=Your studio visit is tomorrow at 14:00.'

Bird CLI

send.sh
bird sms send \
  --from "$BIRD_SMS_FROM" \
  --to "$SMS_TO" \
--text "Your studio visit is tomorrow at 14:00." \
  --category transactional \
  --idempotency-key "$MESSAGE_KEY"

Questions before switching

Can I keep my existing SMS number?
Number retention depends on the number, market and supported transfer process. Keep its existing route active until the receiving sender and registration are ready. The migration guide separates number work from the API change.
Does acceptance mean the message was delivered?
No. Keep the returned message ID and inspect delivery events. Compare providers using final observed outcomes and segment costs, not the initial accepted response.
What should I include in the cost comparison?
Use the same country, sender type, content and volume. Include number rental, registration, carrier fees and message segments where they apply.
