Kalkulator segmen SMS
Carriers bill SMS by the segment. Paste your message copy to see where it splits, whether it uses GSM-7 or UCS-2 encoding, and how many billable segments it requires.
Apa yang menentukan sebuah segmen
A standard SMS segment carries up to 140 bytes, and the character limit depends on the text encoding. Plain Latin text uses the 7-bit GSM-7 alphabet and fits 160 characters into a single segment. Including a character outside that alphabet, such as an emoji, a non-Latin script, or a curly quote, switches the message to 16-bit UCS-2 encoding with a 70-character limit.
Longer messages split into multiple segments. Each part reserves a User Data Header so the recipient's phone can reassemble the message in order, leaving 153 characters per segment in GSM-7 or 67 characters per segment in UCS-2. The calculator below previews those segment boundaries as you type.
GSM-7
The standard 7-bit alphabet for A–Z, digits, and common punctuation: 160 characters for a single SMS, or 153 characters per segment when concatenated. Extended characters such as curly braces, square brackets, ^, ~, |, backslash, and € count as two characters each.
UCS-2
The 16-bit Unicode encoding used when a message contains characters outside GSM-7: 70 characters for a single SMS, or 67 characters per concatenated segment. A single emoji or typographic symbol switches the message to UCS-2.
Smart encoding
Many messages switch to UCS-2 because of typographic punctuation pasted from a document rather than intentional Unicode characters. Curly quotes, long dashes, ellipses, and non-breaking spaces look similar to standard punctuation on screen while cutting the per-segment character limit in half.
Smart encoding replaces those look-alike characters with their GSM-7 equivalents before sending: curly quotes become straight quotes, long dashes become hyphens, and an ellipsis becomes three periods. Characters without a GSM-7 equivalent, including emoji and scripts such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, and Thai, remain unchanged in UCS-2.
When sending through Bird, you can enable smart encoding in your message request options. Read the smart-encoding guide for the character replacement table, or toggle smart encoding below to preview how it shortens your message.
