A support channel needs to reach the customers who ask for help. It also needs to let your team follow up when a case remains unresolved.
Who can start the conversation?
Customers can start on either channel. Businesses need permission to reach out on both.
On Apple Messages, customers can find your business through Maps, Safari, search results or a message link. Apple's invitation messages let you initiate a conversation with customers who opted in using their mobile number.
Apple's messaging policies add requirements for other outbound messages. For account and transaction notifications, your business must send Apple's prescribed disclosure. The disclosure tells customers what you will send and how to manage message preferences. Your business must also keep subscription controls working.
Marketing requires customers to send subscribe expressly and give permission. That consent separates requested marketing from unsolicited messages.
WhatsApp's business policy requires the customer's number and opt-in permission before you contact them. That opt-in shows the customer asked to hear from your business. A phone number on a customer list does not establish that permission.
You can reply without a template within 24 hours of the customer's last WhatsApp message. Outside that window, use an approved message template. A delayed support follow-up may therefore need a template even when the customer originally contacted you.
What does each channel cost?
Apple provides its channel for free. WhatsApp has message charges set by Meta. Messages sent in response to a customer or through a free entry point can qualify for exemptions.
Apple's FAQ separates its free channel from fees a provider may charge. Ask your provider which setup, usage and agent costs its quote includes.
Meta's pricing depends on message category and recipient market. It charges for delivery, rather than a sending attempt. Include any applicable free-message rules and volume tiers when estimating your bill.
Add provider fees and staffing to either estimate. Bird's WhatsApp pricing shows the costs for that channel. Compare total cost per resolved case, so a cheaper message does not hide extra agent work.
Which customers can you reach?
Apple Messages reaches supported Apple devices. WhatsApp reaches customers who use WhatsApp on its supported operating systems.
Apple's customer instructions use the built-in Messages app. Customers can start from an iPhone or iPad and respond from a Mac or Apple Watch.
Measure which devices and messaging apps your support customers use. That evidence determines whether one channel covers your audience or you need both.
What review and staffing does each need?
Apple reviews your customer experience before launch. It also requires live-agent access during business hours. Meta reviews the templates used to initiate WhatsApp conversations.
Apple's Experience Review tests the journey, including automation and handoff to a person. Significant changes after launch can require another review.
Your business must also provide access to a live agent during business hours. Customers can then reach a person when automated replies do not resolve their issue.
On WhatsApp, submit each new outbound template for approval before using it. Meta reviews templates to check that messages follow its guidelines.
If you automate replies, provide the clear escalation path Meta requires. It gives customers a way to reach human help when automation cannot resolve the issue. An agent transfer or support phone number can supply that path.
Which should I choose for support?
- Choose Apple Messages when customers seek help on Apple devices and you can staff its required live support.
- Choose WhatsApp when your customers use WhatsApp across device types and your follow-ups fit its template rules.
- Use both when your audience needs both, with provider fees and staffing included in the budget.
