Who controls the sending stack?

SendGrid: IPs, warm-up and subusers

SendGrid provides shared and dedicated IP addresses and automated IP warm-up. Warm-up throttles traffic through a new IP; other available IPs, including warming IPs with capacity, can handle overflow.

SendGrid’s subusers separate sending, statistics, permissions and credit limits. Its bulk validation API cleans existing address lists, a useful reason to keep an established SendGrid workflow.

“Twilio SendGrid doesn't offer dedicated IP address reputation monitoring as a service.” Twilio’s guide assigns monitoring and maintaining that reputation to the sender. Twilio also provides an Engagement Quality API and offers Expert Services for Pro and Premier accounts, including reputation help and custom warm-up plans.

Bird: infrastructure and reputation

Bird manages its shared sending IPs, dedicated IPs and pools, with automatic warm-up and shared-pool overflow. Bird’s delivery technology adjusts traffic per mailbox provider, while its platform processes delivery feedback and acts on bounce and complaint signals. These controls help you manage delivery for password resets, receipts and other application email.

How do Bird and SendGrid compare?

Choose Bird for transactional sends, marketing broadcasts and agent mailboxes on one platform. Build and operate those workflows through its API, SDKs, CLI or hosted MCP server. SendGrid’s bulk validation and subusers suit established list and tenant workflows. These recommendations are based on documented delivery and integration controls.

CapabilityBirdSendGridWho wins?
Transactional send APIBird’s TypeScript SDK throws typed errors by default; .safe() returns data and error.SendGrid’s Node SDK uses setApiKey and send, with promise rejection handled by catch.
SMTP relayBird SMTP accepts port 465 with TLS or 587 and 2525 with STARTTLS, using an API key.SendGrid SMTP uses smtp.sendgrid.net, username apikey and an API key as the password; TLS on port 587 is recommended.
Email address validationBird email lookup assesses individual addresses or batches of up to 1,000, returning a verdict, confidence, address flags and suggested corrections. The valid field carries the provider’s validity assessment; read it with result and delivery_confidence. See the batch request and replay limits.SendGrid validation supports single-address checks and asynchronous bulk CSV validation on Email API Pro and Premier plans.
Idempotency on sendBird retains completed responses for 3 hours; later retries are fresh requests.SendGrid custom_args carries values into activity data. An echoed correlation value is not itself a send-idempotency guarantee.
Stored content and activity retentionBird stores message bodies for up to 30 days when content storage is enabled.SendGrid’s Email Activity history add-on retains events for up to 30 days. Event history and stored message bodies are different records.
Published pricingBird email plans and rates are read live in the table below.SendGrid’s published plans are linked with the date the displayed amount was checked.

Dedicated IPs and poolsBird dedicated IPs and pools include automatic warm-up with overflow through the shared pool.SendGrid automated warm-up throttles a warming IP and uses other available IPs for overflow, retrying when none are available. IP pools group dedicated addresses.
Deliverability heritageBird acquired SparkPost in 2021. Its sending network carries about 40% of the world’s commercial email.Twilio acquired SendGrid in 2019, adding its email API platform to Twilio.
SPF, DKIM, DMARC and BIMIBird verifies DKIM, return-path and DMARC. BIMI is a separate DNS and logo configuration.SendGrid domain authentication provides SPF, DKIM and DMARC records. With automated security enabled, SendGrid creates and maintains those records.
Event webhooks and signingBird signs webhook deliveries using Standard Webhooks.SendGrid signs Event Webhooks with ECDSA; OAuth verification is also available.
Channels beyond emailBird’s API covers email, SMS, WhatsApp, voice, Verify and Realtime.SendGrid provides the Email API; Twilio also publishes messaging and voice APIs.
Vendor and procurementReview Bird’s published legal terms and policies against your existing agreement and procurement requirements.Review Twilio’s terms of service against your existing agreement and procurement requirements.
MailboxesBird’s agent mailboxes provide addressable inboxes, threads, replies and sender rules managed through code.SendGrid Inbound Parse sends parsed incoming content and attachments to your application’s URL.
Agent toolingBird’s hosted MCP server lets agents send and inspect email and manage domains, templates and webhooks. The bird CLI supports those workflows with JSON output and semantic exit codes for agents.Twilio’s CLI sends SendGrid email through email:send and configures defaults through email:set. Twilio’s hosted MCP public beta retrieves documentation, including SendGrid’s, without executing API calls. Its SendGrid MCP tutorial shows how to build local sending tools.

How do Bird and SendGrid handle a send result?

SendGrid’s send promise rejects on an error. Bird throws typed errors by default; this example opts into .safe() so the application can branch on data and error. A successful API response confirms acceptance for processing. It does not guarantee inbox placement; delivery events report what happens after the request.

What changes around the send call?

How do I migrate SendGrid Inbound Parse to Bird mailboxes?
SendGrid Inbound Parse posts parsed email and attachments to your URL. Bird’s mailboxes expose inboxes, threads and replies as resources. Map your existing receiving handler and conversation state before changing MX records.
How do I prevent duplicate emails when migrating from SendGrid?
Keep a record of each business operation and its send outcome. SendGrid custom_args correlates activity with your application. Reuse the same Idempotency-Key when retrying a Bird request within its 3-hour idempotency window. After it expires, check your send record before retrying.

What does a SendGrid migration involve?

Map each SendGrid personalization to a Bird send or an entry in a batch of up to 100 messages, and move dynamic-template data to Bird template parameters. Publish Bird’s domain-authentication records and import bounces, spam reports, global unsubscribes and unsubscribe-group suppressions. Keep your existing consent and unsubscribe preferences; review how group suppressions map to Bird’s categories.

Rewrite webhook verification for Standard Webhooks and map the event names. Test in Bird’s mail sandbox before switching traffic, and plan a warm-up for new dedicated IPs. Use the migration guide with your coding agent through Bird MCP or the CLI to work through the mappings and cutover order.
