Bird vs Plivo

Bird vs Plivo for SMS

Bird puts sending, customer preferences, registration and delivery events in the same workspace. Your application and an authorized agent operate the same SMS product, so the workflow can continue from setup through troubleshooting.

What Plivo is great at

PowerPacks pick the sender for you. A pool resolves the number by geography and throughput on the send itself. Bird takes the sender per send, or a template send picks one for the destination.

Helper libraries in more languages. Official server SDKs for Java, Node.js, PHP, Python, Ruby, Go and .NET. A Java or Ruby shop writes against Bird's HTTP API instead.

Where Bird is different

An agent operates the account itself. The hosted MCP server at mcp.bird.com gives an agent tools that send SMS, read delivery status back and register 10DLC brands against your real workspace.

Recover an uncertain send. Reuse an Idempotency-Key with the same request within Bird’s three-hour retention window to recover the original result. After that window, the key can create a new request.

Message intent is a first-class field. Every free-text send carries a category of transactional, marketing, authentication or service, which Plivo's send has no counterpart for; its message purpose must be mapped separately from the channel selector.

The matrix

Capability by capability.

Plivo offers PowerPacks and a broad helper-library selection. Both support API registration and delivery callbacks. Bird provides a hosted MCP connection for workspace operations and an explicit message category alongside the send.

CapabilityBirdPlivo
Send requestJSON to /v1/sms/messages on your regional host, with a bearer API key.JSON to a Message endpoint under your account path, with src, dst and text, authenticated with an Auth ID and Auth Token over HTTP Basic.
Safe retriesReuse the same Idempotency-Key and request within Bird’s three-hour retention window.The reviewed Plivo Message create request lists no send-idempotency parameter. Reconcile an uncertain request against message status before resubmitting.
Message intentEvery free-text send carries a category of transactional, marketing, authentication or service.type selects the SMS, MMS or WhatsApp channel. The reviewed SMS create request does not expose Bird’s four-value message-category field.
Hosted workspace operationsBring your own agent. mcp.bird.com is hosted, so Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT or your own runtime signs in once and operates the workspace with the same tools.Plivo provides external agent integrations, including Agno, workflow integrations such as n8n, and a CLI. Its AI Studio can also call external MCP tools.
A2P 10DLC registration/v1/sms/10dlc/* registers brands and campaigns over the API.A 10dlc endpoint under the same account path registers a brand, then a campaign, then links numbers to it.
One host for the whole channelSending, 10DLC registration, and delivery events share a base URL and key.Sending and 10DLC registration sit under the same account path on api.plivo.com, so one client covers both.
Delivery eventsA workspace webhook subscribed to the SMS event types you name, such as sms.sent, sms.delivered and sms.failed, delivered as JSON signed per Standard Webhooks.A url parameter per message names the callback. Use Plivo’s documented signature validation for the callback and SDK version your integration receives.
SDK languagesSMS SDKs for TypeScript, Python, Go and PHP. Use the HTTP API from other languages.Official server SDKs for Java, Node.js, PHP, Python, Ruby, Go, and .NET.

The same send

The send call has a similar shape.

Both examples send one SMS from a Node application. Map Plivo’s src and dst to Bird’s from and to, and declare the message category. Handle API failures separately from later delivery outcomes.

Plivo

send.ts
import { Client } from "plivo";

const client = new Client(process.env.PLIVO_AUTH_ID!, process.env.PLIVO_AUTH_TOKEN!);

try {
  const res = await client.messages.create({
    src:  "+15557654321",
    dst:  "+15551234567",
    text: "Your table is ready.",
  });
  console.log(res.messageUuid);
} catch (err) {
  console.error(err);
}

Bird

send.ts
import { BirdClient } from "@messagebird/sdk";

const bird = new BirdClient({ apiKey: process.env.BIRD_API_KEY! });

const message = await bird.sms
  .send({
    from:     "+15557654321",
    to:       "+15551234567",
    text:     "Your table is ready.",
    category: "transactional",
  });

console.log(message.id, message.status);

What does SMS cost per country?

Read published destination rates on the SMS pricing page and check separately itemised carrier and registration fees. Include segments, sender rental and the applicable destination in your estimate. Ask an SMS specialist about an unpublished rate or a larger deployment.

Switching cost

Plan the cutover.

Map Plivo’s src, dst and text to Bird’s from, to and text. Replace per-message callbacks with workspace webhook subscriptions. Review PowerPack sender selection, opt-out scope and response handling as separate migration work.

Plan sender registration and number porting alongside the integration. Confirm eligibility and transfer requirements with Bird before setting a cutover date. Test the new sender, import effective preferences, and reconcile pending message outcomes before moving production traffic.

Questions people actually ask

How do I test before switching traffic?
Start with a separate Bird sender and the documented sandbox recipient. Verify callbacks, failure handling, encoding and effective opt-outs. Move a small approved cohort before changing the production sender or routing.
How long does an idempotency key protect a retry?
Bird retains an idempotent result for three hours. Reuse the same key and request in that window. After the retention period, submitting the key again can create a new request. An accepted request is not evidence that the recipient received the SMS.
Is Bird a good Plivo alternative for SMS?
Bird is a strong Plivo alternative when you want SMS sending, registration and delivery tools in one workspace, with a typed SDK and hosted agent access. Compare the destinations, sender requirements and operational workflow your application needs. Plivo is worth retaining when PowerPacks and its wider server SDK selection match your sender workflow.
How different is the send call?
Less different than most. Both take JSON with lowercase field names, so src becomes from, dst becomes to, and text is unchanged. The two real additions on the Bird side are category, which declares whether a message is transactional, marketing, authentication or service, and the Idempotency-Key header for matching-request retries within its three-hour retention window.
What can the agent actually do in my account?
Bird’s OAuth consent flow lets you choose the workspace or organization permissions to delegate. An agent’s grant is limited by the requested permissions, your approval and your own access. Review and revoke grants in Connected apps. Keep send authorization in the workflow; an agent connection does not establish customer consent.
Do Bird and Plivo both support A2P 10DLC registration over an API?
Both do, and both keep it beside the send rather than on a separate host. Plivo registers a brand, then a campaign, then links your numbers to it under the same account path as the send. Bird puts /v1/sms/10dlc/* beside /v1/sms/messages under one base URL and one key. Either way the registration goes to The Campaign Registry; review the registration and number-linking work required for your migration.
What does Bird SMS cost per country?
Use Bird’s published SMS rates and carrier fees for the destination and currency you need. Include billable segments, sender rental and registration costs. If a required rate is unavailable, ask a specialist for a quote.
