Who controls the sending stack?

MailerSend: validation and managed warm-up

MailerSend combines bulk CSV list verification with real-time single-address checks, suiting teams that clean uploaded spreadsheet lists inside their email dashboard.

MailerSend’s dedicated-IP allocation process requires an authenticated domain and at least 500,000 emails per month. Their deliverability team reviews the application and warms the IP before you send on it.

MailerSend’s blocklist monitoring watches sending domains and IPs on Professional and Enterprise plans, alerting your team with delisting steps if an address is flagged.

Bird: infrastructure and reputation

Provision dedicated IPs and pools within your plan quota without waiting on a 500,000-email monthly threshold, complete with automatic warm-up and shared-pool overflow. Bird’s Momentum MTA adapts delivery rates per mailbox provider and automatically suppresses hard bounces and spam complaints.

Test inbox vs. spam placement with Inbox Insights seed lists, inspect delivery metrics in Email analytics, and track rival senders in Competitive Insights, backed by Bird’s deliverability specialists.

How do Bird and MailerSend compare?

Compare dedicated-IP eligibility, retry tracking, and message retention alongside multi-channel reach. MailerSend offers uploaded CSV verification and North American SMS, while Bird combines self-service dedicated IPs, agent mailboxes, and global SMS in one API.

CapabilityBirdMailerSendWho wins?
Transactional send APIBird’s TypeScript SDK throws typed errors by default and offers a result-tuple mode for explicit error branching without try/catch blocks.MailerSend’s Node SDK and REST send endpoint accept JSON payloads with recipient objects and template personalization.
SMTP relayBird SMTP supports implicit TLS on port 465 and STARTTLS on ports 587 and 2525, authenticated with your standard workspace API key.MailerSend SMTP generates dedicated SMTP usernames and passwords per verified domain over STARTTLS on port 587.
Email address validationBird email lookup verifies single addresses in real time, returning a deliverability verdict, confidence score, address risk flags, and typo suggestions.MailerSend validation supports both bulk CSV list uploads and real-time single-address API checks.
Idempotency on sendBird retains completed send responses for 3 hours so retried requests with the same key never duplicate an email.MailerSend’s send endpoint returns a message header identifier for status lookups, which tracks an accepted send rather than deduplicating client retries.
Stored message retentionBird stores rendered message bodies for up to 30 days when content storage is enabled.MailerSend content tracking retains HTML previews for 7 days on Starter and 30 days on Professional and Enterprise, with a paid add-on up to 365 days.

Agent toolingBird’s hosted MCP server exposes 354 tools, and the Bird CLI manages domains, templates, webhooks, and sends with structured JSON output and semantic exit codes.MailerSend’s hosted MCP server sends email and SMS and manages domains, templates, and webhooks, while its CLI adds recipient and suppression commands.

How do you send one HTML email?

Both SDKs send a transactional HTML email in a single call. MailerSend’s client constructs a parameter object and submits it to the email send method, while Bird’s SDK supports both thrown typed errors and result-object branching.

MailerSend

send.ts
import { MailerSend, EmailParams, Sender, Recipient } from "mailersend";

const ms = new MailerSend({ apiKey: process.env.MAILERSEND_API_KEY! });

await ms.email.send(
  new EmailParams()
    .setFrom(new Sender("onboarding@yourdomain.com", "Acme"))
    .setTo([new Recipient("customer@example.com")])
    .setSubject("Your March invoice")
    .setHtml("<p>Attached.</p>"),
);

Bird

send.ts
import { BirdClient } from "@messagebird/sdk";

const bird = new BirdClient({ apiKey: process.env.BIRD_API_KEY! });

const { data, error } = await bird.email
  .send({
    from:    { email: "onboarding@yourdomain.com", name: "Acme" },
    to:      ["customer@example.com"],
    subject: "Your March invoice",
    html:    "<p>Attached.</p>",
  })
  .safe();

if (error) console.error(error.message);
else console.log(data.id);

What changes around the send call?

Which suppression lists should I import?
Import your permanent MailerSend suppressions (hard bounces, spam complaints, unsubscribes, and manual blocks) into Bird, and leave the On Hold list behind. MailerSend states: “These emails will be blocked for 72 hours, after which they will be automatically removed from the list.” Importing a temporary 72-hour soft-bounce hold into Bird’s permanent suppression list would block those customers indefinitely. Our MailerSend migration guide shows how to export only permanent blocks.
How should I prevent duplicate sends during migration?
Store an application-side record for each send and pass an idempotency key when calling Bird. MailerSend’s send response header returns a message identifier so you can poll the status of an accepted request, whereas Bird’s 3-hour idempotency window lets you safely retry timed-out requests with the same key without sending a second email.

Published email plans

Bird paid plans add a monthly deposit to a shared balance. Transactional sends use the plan's rate. The comparison below assumes the balance is used only for email; other usage and add-ons cost extra.

Pricing verdict: Mixed by volume. At each rival allowance, Bird's estimated monthly cash requirement is the greater of the paid plan deposit and transactional usage at its published rate. The Free plan uses its included allowance where available. Deposits are spendable balance, not an extra fee. Only matching volumes and currencies with complete rates affect the verdict.

How should you compare email costs?

What do the Bird and MailerSend price rows include?
The tables compare the monthly cash outlay on Bird at each send volume against MailerSend’s published tiers. Bird’s figures read live from our pricing catalogue, while MailerSend’s figures link directly to their pricing page with the verification date. Check the billing cadence, included send allowances, and add-on fees before selecting a tier. Review MailerSend’s pricing page to confirm which features and retention windows come with your chosen plan.

What does a MailerSend migration involve?

Start by mapping MailerSend’s recipient objects, template references, and personalization variables to Bird’s send payload and templates. Follow our MailerSend migration guide to import permanent hard bounces, complaints, and unsubscribes while leaving temporary 72-hour soft-bounce holds behind.

Next, update your webhook handler from MailerSend’s HMAC signature check to Bird’s Standard Webhooks verification, and replace generated domain SMTP credentials with a standard Bird API key if you send via SMTP. Verify your integration in Bird’s mail sandbox before moving live traffic, and allow time for automated warm-up on new dedicated IPs.
