Bird vs Plivo
Bird vs Plivo for SMS
Send SMS, manage opt-outs, register 10DLC campaigns, and track delivery webhooks in one workspace where both your application and your AI agents can operate the channel. Compare Bird with Plivo’s JSON send API, Powerpack number pools, and server SDKs.

What Plivo does well,
and where Bird is different.
What Plivo is great at
Powerpacks pick the sender for you. A number pool selects a local sender by geography and throughput on the send call, whereas Bird takes an explicit sender per request or resolves one through a message template.
Helper libraries in more languages. Official server SDKs for Java, Node.js, PHP, Python, Ruby, Go and .NET. A Java or Ruby shop writes against Bird's HTTP API instead.
Where Bird is different
AI agents can operate your workspace directly. Bird’s hosted MCP server lets Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT, or your own agent send messages, inspect delivery status, and submit 10DLC registrations against your live workspace.
Safe retries prevent duplicate texts. Include an idempotency key on send requests so retrying a timed-out call within three hours returns the original response instead of texting the customer twice.
Declare message intent on the send call. Free-text sends specify whether a message is transactional, marketing, authentication, or service traffic directly on the request, whereas Plivo’s send request selects the messaging channel without a traffic category.
The matrix
Capability by capability.
Plivo offers Powerpack number pools and seven official server SDKs, and both platforms support programmatic 10DLC registration and delivery webhooks. Bird adds a hosted MCP server for AI agents, idempotent retries, and traffic categories on free-text sends.
| Capability | Bird | Plivo |
|---|---|---|
| Send request | BirdSend a JSON request to the SMS messages endpoint on your regional host using a single bearer API key. | PlivoSend a JSON request to the account Message endpoint specifying the source number, destination number, and text body, authenticated with an Auth ID and Auth Token over HTTP Basic. |
| Safe retries | BirdPass an idempotency key on the send call to replay the original outcome if you retry within three hours. | PlivoPlivo’s message creation endpoint has no idempotency parameter, so your application must check message status before retrying a timed-out send. |
| Message intent | BirdFree-text sends declare a traffic category (transactional, marketing, authentication, or service) on the request. | PlivoThe request selects the channel (SMS, MMS, or WhatsApp) without declaring whether the traffic is transactional, marketing, authentication, or service. |
| Hosted workspace operations | BirdConnect Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT, or your own runtime to Bird’s hosted MCP server to send texts, check delivery logs, and manage 10DLC registrations. | PlivoPlivo provides external agent integrations, including Agno, workflow integrations such as n8n, and a CLI. Its AI Studio can also call external MCP tools. |
| A2P 10DLC registration | BirdRegister US 10DLC brands and campaigns programmatically through the same regional API host. | PlivoRegister brands and campaigns and link numbers through Plivo’s 10DLC endpoints under the same account path. |
| One host for the whole channel | BirdSending, 10DLC registration, and delivery webhooks share one regional base URL and one bearer API key. | PlivoMessage sending and 10DLC registration live under the same account path on Plivo’s API host, so one client covers both. |
| Delivery events | BirdSubscribe a workspace webhook to sent, delivered, and failed SMS events delivered as JSON payloads signed with Standard Webhooks. | PlivoPass a callback URL per message and verify webhook signatures using Plivo’s signature header validation. |
| SDK languages | BirdSMS SDKs for TypeScript, Python, Go and PHP. Use the HTTP API from other languages. | PlivoOfficial server SDKs for Java, Node.js, PHP, Python, Ruby, Go, and .NET. |
The same send
The send call has a similar shape.
Both examples send a single SMS from a Node.js application. Map Plivo’s source and destination fields to Bird’s sender and recipient fields, add the traffic category, and handle delivery receipts through your workspace webhook.
Plivo
import { Client } from "plivo";
const client = new Client(process.env.PLIVO_AUTH_ID!, process.env.PLIVO_AUTH_TOKEN!);
try {
const res = await client.messages.create({
src: "+15557654321",
dst: "+15551234567",
text: "Your table is ready.",
});
console.log(res.messageUuid);
} catch (err) {
console.error(err);
}
Bird
import { BirdClient } from "@messagebird/sdk";
const bird = new BirdClient({ apiKey: process.env.BIRD_API_KEY! });
const message = await bird.sms
.send({
from: "+15557654321",
to: "+15551234567",
text: "Your table is ready.",
category: "transactional",
});
console.log(message.id, message.status);
What does SMS cost per country?
Read published destination rates on the SMS pricing page and check separately itemised carrier and registration fees. Include segments, sender rental and the applicable destination in your estimate. Ask an SMS specialist about an unpublished rate or a larger deployment.
Switching cost
Plan the cutover.
Map Plivo’s source, destination, and text fields to Bird’s sender, recipient, and text fields, and replace per-message callback URLs with a workspace webhook subscription. If you rely on Plivo Powerpacks to select numbers by geography, map that routing to explicit senders or Bird message templates.
Run 10DLC campaign registration and number porting in parallel with your code changes. Confirm number transfer eligibility and carrier requirements with Bird before scheduling your cutover, import your existing opt-out list so unsubscribed recipients stay suppressed, and verify live delivery receipts on a test number before shifting production traffic.
