What is a spam complaint rate, and what threshold do Gmail and Yahoo enforce?

A spam complaint rate measures recipient spam reports; Google recommends below 0.1 percent, and both providers require below 0.3 percent.

A receiver can accept mail and still put it in spam. Automatic filtering can reduce the population able to report messages from their inboxes.

What thresholds do Gmail and Yahoo use?

Google recommends keeping its reported spam rate below 0.1 percent. Both providers require staying below 0.3 percent.

Google's sender FAQ distinguishes the recommended target from the level senders must avoid reaching. Yahoo's sender guidance specifies the 0.3 percent limit.

A rate of 0.2 percent is below the ceiling. It exceeds Google's target. Meeting the ceiling alone does not satisfy the recommendation.

With 1,000 messages in the measured population, one complaint produces 0.1 percent. Three produce 0.3 percent, reaching the ceiling. With 50,000 measured messages, 150 complaints produce 0.3 percent.

What does Google's rate count?

Google measures recipient spam reports on qualifying inbox deliveries, using DKIM-authenticated mail to Gmail accounts.

Google's dashboard definition refers to messages delivered to engaged recipients' inboxes and then marked as spam. Messages moved from spam with a not-spam action also count toward inbox deliveries.

Mail automatically placed in spam is not itself a recipient complaint. An open or click is not a complaint either.

The denominator is the population Google measures. It does not include every message your application sends. Your own delivery totals therefore cannot reproduce the dashboard's rate.

Does Yahoo use the same denominator?

Yahoo calculates its spam rate against mail delivered to the inbox.

Its sender guidance states that basis explicitly. Use Yahoo's own feedback when assessing compliance, because your sending platform's accepted-message count includes no guarantee of inbox placement.

A platform rate and a provider rate can differ without either calculation being broken. Confirm what each divides by before comparing them.

Why can a complaint rate fall during a delivery problem?

Automatic spam filtering can reduce the number of inbox recipients who can report the message.

Google warns that substantial automatic filtering can make its displayed complaint rate look low. A zero rate therefore does not establish that recipients want your mail.

Compare the complaint trend with delivery errors and measured placement. A falling rate alongside worsening placement needs investigation. Postmaster Tools explains the limits of Google's dashboards.

How do you handle complaints with Bird?

You inspect complaint events and the suppression records they create to stop further marketing mail to those recipients.

The suppression's reason is complaint, and its origin is complaint_event. Its applies_to value of non_transactional blocks marketing. It allows transactional messages such as password resets.

The suppression guide explains the records. Bird's received complaint events do not reveal every action inside every mailbox provider, so they cannot replace provider compliance reports.

Yahoo requires DKIM domains to enroll in its complaint feedback program so senders can process reports promptly. Google supplies aggregate campaign feedback through the Postmaster Tools feedback loop. These are different reporting mechanisms.

How do you reduce complaints?

Send to recipients who asked for the mail and give them an easy way to stop it. Google recommends these practices to reduce recipient spam reports.

Google recommends confirming addresses before subscription, checking continued interest and making unsubscribe easy. Address confirmation reduces unwanted subscriptions caused by mistakes or unauthorized signups.

Review complaints by signup source and message type to identify where expectations diverged. Stop using an acquisition source that cannot establish permission.

Use one-click unsubscribe alongside a visible body link so recipients can leave without reporting spam. Reduce or stop marketing to persistently inactive recipients under your list-hygiene policy.

Google advises allowing up to seven days for spam-rate compliance to reflect corrective action. A change made Monday need not produce a compliant result on Tuesday.

In short

  1. Google separates its target from the ceiling.

Google recommends below 0.1 percent. Both Gmail and Yahoo require below 0.3 percent.

  2. The denominator depends on the provider.

An inbox-based complaint rate cannot be reproduced by dividing reports by all sends.

  3. Low rates can accompany filtering.

Fewer inbox deliveries can leave fewer recipients able to report your messages.

  4. Complaints require action on recipients.

Bird records received complaints as suppressions that block subsequent marketing mail.
