Install the Bird plugin for Cursor

Install Bird from the Cursor Marketplace or directly through Cursor’s plugin command. A single install connects Bird’s MCP server and loads agent skills for CLI operations and email deliverability audits so you can configure senders, inspect domains, and send messages right away. The recording walks through adding the Bird plugin marketplace under Cursor’s plugin settings.

You can also find Bird on cursor.directory, or run npx skills add messagebird/bird-ai to install the agent skills standalone alongside an existing MCP setup.

Connect Cursor to your Bird workspace in three quick steps.

Install Bird’s hosted MCP server with one click or paste the server configuration into Cursor, then sign in through your browser so your agent can work with your senders, templates, and logs.

~/.cursor/mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "bird": {
      "url": "https://mcp.bird.com"
    }
  }
}
  1. Register the MCP server

    Click Add to Cursor for one-click setup, or save the server configuration shown here in your Cursor MCP settings file. If you already installed the Bird plugin from the marketplace, the server is registered for you.

  2. Authorize your workspace

    Open Customize → MCPs in the Cursor sidebar, select Bird, and complete the browser sign-in prompt to grant access to your workspace.

  3. Confirm your active workspace

    Ask your agent to check which Bird account and workspace are connected before running your first messaging task. Once it confirms your workspace identity, you are ready to draft and send.

Draft and send a test welcome email and verify delivery from Cursor.

Once your workspace is connected, run these two prompts in Cursor’s agent chat to draft a transactional template, send a live test email to your inbox, and inspect its delivery events.

Send a welcome email
Write a short welcome email for new customers of my product and preview it with sample values. Show me the draft first. Once I approve it, send it to my own address from onboarding@messagebird.dev.
Check the delivery
Look up the welcome email you just sent and tell me whether it was delivered. If it was not, list its delivery events and explain what went wrong.
  1. Draft and preview the template

    Your agent writes the welcome email as a reusable template and renders a preview with sample data in Cursor so you can review the copy and layout before sending a message.

  2. Send from the shared onboarding domain

    After you approve the draft, the test message sends from Bird’s shared onboarding domain before you configure DNS records. When you are ready for production traffic, your agent can help verify your custom sending domain.

  3. Inspect delivery status and events

    Your agent queries Bird for the message status and per-recipient delivery events, explaining whether the email landed in the inbox or why a bounce or deferral occurred.

Debug delivery, wire new channels, and inspect live traffic from your editor.

After sending your first test email, use Cursor to audit domain health, configure SMS, WhatsApp, or Voice senders for your application, and check active calls and message logs.

Understand a delivery issue
Check my recent email failures. Group them by reason, inspect the affected sending domain, and tell me what needs fixing before making changes.
Prepare a new channel
Help me set up SMS for order updates. Check my workspace and available senders, explain what is missing, then prepare a test for a number I provide.
See what is happening now
List the Voice calls that are active right now. Separate connected calls from calls that are still ringing, and show their IDs.

How workspace permissions, credentials, and troubleshooting work

What to expect when authorizing Cursor, managing production credentials, and debugging connection status.

Does connecting Bird’s MCP server give my Cursor agent unrestricted access?

No. Bird tools run with the workspace permissions you hold and grant during browser authorization, and your agent asks before sending messages or changing domain settings. You can revoke the Cursor connection at any time from your Bird account.

Do I need to generate an API key to use Bird in Cursor?

You do not need an API key to use the hosted MCP server in Cursor because it authenticates through browser sign-in. When your agent wires SMS, WhatsApp, Voice, or email into your application code, your deployed service uses its own scoped Bird API credential.

Why do Bird tools appear in Cursor while tool calls fail?

Adding the MCP server URL registers the tool definitions in Cursor, and signing in through the browser is a separate step. Open Customize → MCPs in Cursor, reauthorize Bird in your browser, and ask the agent to verify your active workspace before running a task.

Can I use the same Bird plugin and skills in Grok Bot?

Yes. The Bird plugin, including the hosted MCP connector and agent skills for CLI operations and email deliverability audits, is available in the Grok Bot Marketplace. Set up Grok Bot

Send your first test email from Cursor, then verify your custom domain and wire transactional email, SMS, WhatsApp, and Voice into your application.
