Email became a primary revenue driver
The challenge
Growing pains and email strains.
Podia started out as a platform for selling online courses. As it expanded to include website building and marketing tools for creators, email shifted from a nice-to-have addition into a core competency people come to Podia for. But scaling email at that level brought new strains.
With a small team of about 30 people, Podia had no opportunity to build out a Trust and Safety team or email reputation team in-house. As a platform serving thousands of creators — each sending to their own audiences — its reputation, and by extension its creators' reputations, hinged on strong email compliance. When one sender encountered issues, it rippled through the entire account.
The lack of granular control was the sharpest pain. The tipping point came about three years ago, when Podia's rapid growth pushed it beyond the capabilities of Bird's self-service tier and toward the reliability, expert guidance, and advanced features of Bird's Enterprise plan.
“Our compliance team would have to suspend the entire account if they saw spoofing or phishing.”
Jamie Lawrence, Chief Technical Officer, Podia
The solution
A more robust email platform, built on validation, isolation, and analytics.
Podia turned to Bird's Enterprise plan so the team could "sleep at night" while sending emails on behalf of other customers and upholding compliance standards. The upgrade leveled up email management across three areas.
- Email validation and sub-accounts.Podia could validate email addresses during import — classifying emails as spam or not spam in an importer where people upload a CSV — reducing spam complaints and improving deliverability. Validation improvements let Podia build an account configuration framework that mapped each sender to a sub-account, confining risk so a single user's issues could be turned off without affecting the entire customer base.
- Custom domains via the API.Creators wanted to send from their own domains. Bird's API streamlined domain validation without manually adding domains in a user interface — enhancing creators' professional image and improving deliverability, especially for Podia's more established creators.
- Advanced analytics via webhooks.Bird notified Podia's system whenever an email was opened, a link clicked, or another event occurred, letting Podia build email analytics inside its own app. Creators could track open rates and click-through rates to optimize their campaigns.
“The concept of sub-accounts was beneficial. We gained the ability to confine the risk for each user, to put them into a sub-account, and then we could just turn off that sub-account.”
Jamie Lawrence, Chief Technical Officer, Podia
The results
Navigating complex email challenges with confidence.
With Bird, Podia enhanced its email deliverability, reduced spam complaints, and increased revenue through email verification and validation. Its support team can now search for a customer's email address and confirm the events for that customer — an ability it didn't have before — and lean on Bird's technical account teams when facing issues like Microsoft changing link parameters.
Improved deliverability
Reduced spam complaints and boosted trust across thousands of creators.
Custom domains
Creators send from their own domains via the API, enhancing brand credibility.
Real-time analytics
Webhook-driven engagement tracking built directly into the Podia app.
By enhancing its email functionality, Podia transformed email marketing from a secondary focus into a primary revenue driver — when a creator grows their list and upgrades their Podia email plan, that drives expansion revenue.
“We have our support team in Bird so that they can search for someone's email address and say, 'Oh yeah, we see these events for that customer, or we see that email was sent and delivered.' That's an ability we didn't have before.”
Jamie Lawrence, Chief Technical Officer, Podia
What's next
Tying every feature into email.
Looking ahead, Podia plans to expand its email capabilities by integrating email with other features, such as its new blog tool — letting creators automatically send new blog posts to subscribers, fostering deeper engagement and driving more frequent email use.
“We'll be tying existing and new features into our email functionality, encouraging users to send even more emails.”
Jamie Lawrence, Chief Technical Officer, Podia
