Why OTP Reliability Matters

A failed OTP is a lost customer. When a user tries to log in, verify their identity, or complete a transaction, and the verification code doesn't arrive, they don't wait patiently and try again. They abandon the action. They contact support. They switch to a competitor.

The financial impact is significant. If 3% of your OTPs fail to deliver and each failed OTP costs $2 in support overhead plus $15 in lost transaction value, a business sending 1 million OTPs per month loses $510,000 annually to OTP delivery failures. Improving delivery from 97% to 99.5% recovers most of that.

Bird's OTP infrastructure is engineered for reliability above all else. Redundant carrier connections, intelligent routing, automatic failover, and real-time monitoring ensure that verification codes reach users within seconds, every time.

Global Delivery Infrastructure

OTP delivery is a global challenge with local nuances. Each country has different carrier ecosystems, regulatory requirements, number types, and delivery characteristics. A routing strategy that works in the US fails in India. A number type that delivers instantly in Europe is blocked in Southeast Asia.

Bird maintains direct connections with 300+ carriers across 220+ countries. Our routing engine selects the optimal path for each message based on real-time carrier performance data: latency, delivery rate, and cost. If a primary route degrades, traffic automatically shifts to the backup route within seconds — before users notice.

Country-specific compliance is handled automatically. Sender ID registration in markets that require it (India, Saudi Arabia, Philippines). Number masking where regulations mandate it. Content formatting that passes carrier filters in each market. You send a single API call; we handle the country-specific complexity.

300+ Direct Carrier Connections. Direct routes to major carriers in every market — no aggregator latency, no middleman failures.

Intelligent Route Selection. Real-time optimization selects the fastest, most reliable delivery path for each message.

Automatic Failover. Sub-second route switching when a carrier degrades — users get their code without noticing the switch.

Multi-Channel Verification

SMS isn't the only verification channel, and for some users it isn't the best one. Bird supports multiple verification channels — SMS, WhatsApp, email, voice call, and push notification — with automatic fallback when the primary channel fails.

The verification flow: attempt delivery via the user's preferred channel (typically SMS). If undelivered after 30 seconds, automatically try the next channel (WhatsApp or voice). If the user has the app installed, simultaneously send a push notification with the code.

WhatsApp OTP delivery is particularly effective in markets with high adoption. It's free (authentication conversations are not charged), delivery rates are near 100% (messages are delivered over data, not carrier networks), and the user experience is seamless — the code appears in their primary messaging app.

Silent network authentication (SNA) is available on supported carriers: the user's identity is verified through their mobile network connection without any code entry. Zero friction, near-instant verification. Bird's API automatically detects SNA eligibility and uses it when available, falling back to OTP when it's not.

Multi-Channel Fallback. Automatic escalation from SMS to WhatsApp to voice to email — ensuring every verification succeeds.

WhatsApp OTP. Free OTP delivery via WhatsApp with near-100% delivery rates in high-adoption markets.

Silent Network Auth. Zero-friction identity verification through the mobile network — no code entry required.

Fraud Prevention

OTP channels are a target for fraud — SMS pumping (artificially generating OTP requests to earn carrier revenue), bot attacks (automated credential stuffing that triggers thousands of OTPs), and SIM swap attacks (intercepting codes by porting the victim's number).

Bird's fraud prevention layer protects against these threats. Rate limiting detects and blocks excessive OTP requests from single IPs, devices, or phone numbers. Geo-matching compares the OTP request location with the phone number's registration country — a US-registered number requesting an OTP from a Nigerian IP is flagged.

SMS pumping detection identifies patterns of OTP requests to numbers controlled by fraudulent parties. When detected, the system blocks the suspicious traffic and alerts your team. This protection can save enterprises tens of thousands of dollars monthly in fraudulent SMS charges.

Rate Limiting. Configurable limits by IP, device, and phone number to block automated attacks.

Geo-Matching. Flag or block OTP requests where the requester's location doesn't match the phone number's country.

SMS Pumping Detection. Pattern detection identifies and blocks fraudulent OTP traffic before it generates carrier charges.

Global fintech platform

After switching to Bird for OTP, our delivery rate went from 94% to 99.5% and average delivery time dropped from 8 seconds to under 3. Support tickets about missing codes dropped by 80%.

Bird delivers 99.5% of OTPs successfully, with a median delivery time under 3 seconds. This is achieved through 300+ direct carrier connections in 220+ countries, intelligent route selection based on real-time performance data, and automatic failover that switches routes within seconds when a carrier degrades.

Bird's fraud prevention layer includes rate limiting by IP, device, and phone number; geo-matching that flags requests where the requester's location doesn't match the phone number's country; and SMS pumping detection that identifies patterns of fraudulent OTP requests. These protections can save enterprises tens of thousands of dollars monthly in fraudulent SMS charges.

Yes. WhatsApp authentication messages are free (not charged by Meta) and deliver with near-100% success rates since messages travel over data networks rather than carrier SMS infrastructure. Bird's API automatically detects WhatsApp availability and uses it when possible, falling back to SMS when it's not. This reduces OTP costs while improving delivery rates.

Silent Network Authentication (SNA) verifies a user's identity through their mobile network connection without any code entry — zero friction, near-instant verification. Bird's API automatically detects SNA eligibility on supported carriers and uses it when available, falling back to traditional OTP when it's not. This provides the best possible user experience.
