## Set up with your agent

[Read the agent setup guide](/docs/ai/set-up-your-agent)

Copy this prompt into your coding agent:

```text
Bird connects customer communications, data and automation. Help me build with Bird using my coding agent.
1. Read https://bird.com/docs/ai/set-up-your-agent.md and follow its setup workflow for this client. Use an existing connected Bird MCP server or signed-in CLI when available.
2. Read the product guide for the task I want to complete and inspect my existing integration. Identify the workspace, available operations and required setup.
3. Help me complete a first example for the product and destination I choose. Follow the operation through to its actual result, explain any uncertainty, and help me choose the next step.
First task: Read the provider-specific SMS migration guide. Prepare a test plan for sender registrations, consent, message fields, webhook signatures and delivery states. Keep the current provider running until I approve a cutover.
Use this Bird page as the starting context: https://bird.com/sms-api/compare/bird-vs-twilio
Read its Markdown alternative and linked guides. Keep the first example relevant to this page and the customer outcome I choose. Preserve the supplied campaign context when following Bird signup or sales links.
## What Twilio is great at. Where Bird is different.
### What Twilio is great at
- Messaging Services organize senders. Twilio groups senders, routing settings and callbacks in a Messaging Service. Map the settings your application uses as part of a migration.
- Helper libraries in more languages. Official libraries for Node.js, Python, PHP, Java, Ruby, Go and C#. A Java or Ruby shop writes against Bird's HTTP API instead.
- Existing integrations matter. An application already built around Twilio’s Messaging Services, callbacks and helper libraries has behavior to preserve during a provider change.
### Where Bird is different
- An agent operates the account itself. The hosted MCP server at mcp.bird.com gives an agent tools that send SMS, read delivery status back and register 10DLC brands against your real workspace.
- Recover an uncertain send. Reuse an Idempotency-Key with the same request within Bird’s three-hour retention window to recover the original result. After that window, the key can create a new request.
- One host and one key for the whole channel. Sending, 10DLC registration and delivery events sit under the same base URL, where Twilio splits registration onto messaging.twilio.com.
- Message intent is a first-class field. Every free-text send carries a category of transactional, marketing, authentication or service, which the Messages API has no counterpart for.
## Capability by capability.
Twilio provides a broad helper-library ecosystem. Bird keeps sending and registration on one API host and offers hosted tools for authorized account operations. Both expose delivery events and API registration; the request format itself is a preference, not a delivery advantage.
| Capability | Bird | Twilio |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Send request | JSON to /v1/sms/messages on your regional host, with a bearer API key. | Form-encoded fields such as To, From and Body sent to the account’s Messages resource using HTTP Basic authentication. |
| Safe retries | Reuse the same Idempotency-Key and request within Bird’s three-hour retention window. | The reviewed Twilio Message resource lists no send-idempotency parameter. Reconcile an uncertain request against message status before resubmitting. |
| Hosted MCP server | Bring your own agent. mcp.bird.com is hosted, so Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT or your own runtime signs in once and operates the workspace with the same tools. | Twilio’s hosted Docs MCP serves public reference material without an account. Its separate self-run MCP server supports account tooling; evaluate the deployment and permissions your workflow needs. |
| One host for the whole channel | Sending, 10DLC registration, and delivery events share a base URL and key. | Registration lives on messaging.twilio.com while sends stay on api.twilio.com, so a client holds two roots. |
| A2P 10DLC registration | /v1/sms/10dlc/* registers brands and campaigns over the API. | Brand Registration and US App-to-Person campaign resources submit registration through Twilio’s Messaging API. |
| Delivery events | A workspace webhook subscribed to the SMS event types you name, such as sms.sent, sms.delivered and sms.failed, delivered as JSON signed per Standard Webhooks. | A StatusCallback URL per message, form-encoded and signed with X-Twilio-Signature, plus the Console Debugger. |
| Skills for coding agents | The bird-ai plugin, read by Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and GitHub Copilot. | The twilio-developer-kit plugin, read by Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and OpenCode CLI. |
| SDK languages | SMS SDKs for TypeScript, Python, Go and PHP. Use the HTTP API from other languages. | Official helper libraries for Node.js, Python, PHP, Java, Ruby, Go, and C#. |
## The send call has a similar shape.
Both examples send one SMS and handle API failures through exceptions. Twilio uses its Messages resource; Bird uses a typed SMS method and requires a category on free-text sends. In either integration, follow the message status or delivery events after acceptance.
**Twilio** · send.ts
```typescript
import twilio from "twilio";

const client = twilio(process.env.TWILIO_ACCOUNT_SID!, process.env.TWILIO_AUTH_TOKEN!);

try {
  const message = await client.messages.create({
    from: "+15557654321",
    to:   "+15551234567",
    body: "Your table is ready.",
  });
  console.log(message.sid);
} catch (err) {
  console.error(err);
}
```
**Bird** · send.ts
```typescript
import { BirdClient } from "@messagebird/sdk";

const bird = new BirdClient({ apiKey: process.env.BIRD_API_KEY! });

const message = await bird.sms
  .send({
    from:     "+15557654321",
    to:       "+15551234567",
    text:     "Your table is ready.",
    category: "transactional",
  });

console.log(message.id, message.status);
```
## What does SMS cost per country?
Read published destination rates on the [SMS pricing page](/pricing/sms) and check separately itemised [carrier and registration fees](/pricing/sms/fees). Include segments, sender rental and the applicable destination in your estimate. Ask an SMS specialist about an unpublished rate or a larger deployment.
## Switching cost: Plan the cutover.
Map Twilio's To, From and Body to Bird's to, from and text. Replace per-message StatusCallback handling with workspace webhook subscriptions. Review sender-pool behavior separately before replacing a Messaging Service SID with an eligible sender value.
Plan sender registration and number porting alongside the integration. Confirm eligibility and transfer requirements with Bird before setting a cutover date. Test the new sender, import effective preferences, and reconcile pending message outcomes before moving production traffic.
## Questions people actually ask
### How do I test before switching traffic?
Start with a separate Bird sender and the documented sandbox recipient. Verify callbacks, failure handling, encoding and effective opt-outs. Move a small approved cohort before changing the production sender or routing.
### How long does an idempotency key protect a retry?
Bird retains an idempotent result for three hours. Reuse the same key and request in that window. After the retention period, submitting the key again can create a new request. An accepted request is not evidence that the recipient received the SMS.
### Is Bird a good Twilio alternative for SMS?
Bird is a strong Twilio alternative when you want SMS sending, registration and delivery tools in one workspace, with a typed SDK and hosted agent access. Compare the destinations, sender requirements and operational workflow your application needs. Twilio is worth retaining when your team already depends on Twilio integrations or its broader helper-library choices.
### What can the agent actually do in my account?
Bird’s OAuth consent flow lets you choose the workspace or organization permissions to delegate. An agent’s grant is limited by the requested permissions, your approval and your own access. Review and revoke grants in Connected apps. Keep send authorization in the workflow; an agent connection does not establish customer consent.
### What is the best SMS API for an AI agent to operate?
Compare the operations, permissions, deployment and recovery your workflow needs. Bird hosts account tools for SMS sends, message status and registration. Twilio offers hosted documentation tools and a separate self-run server for account tooling. Use a bounded, authorized test to evaluate the complete workflow.
### Does Twilio have an MCP server as well?
It does, and more than one. Twilio hosts a server at mcp.twilio.com/docs exposing two tools, twilio__search and twilio__retrieve, over their public API specs, needing no Twilio account. They also publish a self-run server at github.com/twilio-labs/mcp and Twilio Skills for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and OpenCode CLI. Twilio describes MCP and Skills as Public Beta products.
### Do Bird and Twilio both support A2P 10DLC registration over an API?
Both do, and the difference is topology rather than capability. Twilio registers brands and campaigns through resources on messaging.twilio.com while sends use api.twilio.com/2010-04-01/. Bird puts /v1/sms/10dlc/* beside /v1/sms/messages under one base URL and one key, so registration and sending are the same client. Either way the registration goes to The Campaign Registry; review the registration and number-linking work required for your migration.
### What does Bird SMS cost per country?
Use Bird’s published SMS rates and carrier fees for the destination and currency you need. Include billable segments, sender rental and registration costs. If a required rate is unavailable, ask a specialist for a quote.
