Find compliance keywords
Compliance keywords are predefined terms that allow SMS recipients to control their subscription status in accordance with telecommunications regulations like TCPA and carrier guidelines.
These mandatory, universal terms are automatically recognized throughout the SMS ecosystem.
Watch the tutorial below to learn how to manage compliance keywords, including:
Viewing the predefined keywords set by carriers and regulatory bodies
Customizing response messages
Adding your brand name and contact page link
Reviewing keywords in different languages
Remember: Compliance keywords cannot be created or removed, but response messages can be customized to align with your brand while maintaining regulatory compliance.
Step 1: Access SMS Settings
In the main menu Open Developer product
In the menu Navigate to Channels
Expand SMS section
Click on SMS settings
Open Automations tab
Step 2: Locate compliance keywords
Scroll down to the Compliance Keywords section.
Here you'll see all predefined compliance keywords such as:
STOP (to unsubscribe)
HELP (to get assistance)
START (to opt back in)
Step 3: Understand keyword limitations
Note that compliance keywords are predefined by carriers and regulatory bodies.
You cannot create new compliance keywords or remove existing ones.
These keywords are mandatory and universal across all SMS providers.
Step 4: Customize response messages
Click the Edit button next to any compliance keyword.
This opens the message editor for that specific keyword's response.
Step 5: Update response content
Customize the message text while ensuring it fulfills regulatory requirements.
As a best practice:
Include your brand name for recognition
Add a link to your contact page
Keep the message clear and concise
Eg. Reply START to receive updates. Reply STOP to opt-out or HELP for info. Msg&Data rates may apply. Visit bird.com for more information.
Step 6: Save your changes
Once you're satisfied with your customized message, click Save.
Your updated response message is now active.
Step 7: Manage multilingual compliance
In the section where you see all the compliance keywords, click on the drop-down in the top right corner
Use the language dropdown menu to view compliance keywords in different languages.
Ensure all language versions have appropriate response messages.
This is especially important for campaigns targeting international audiences.
